The South Central Region is a large and diverse region of 36,500 square kilometres, stretching from the western tip of Kangaroo Island to the edge of the Murray Mallee on the Victorian border. 97% of the land area is rural. In addition to large tracts of wilderness, grazing and cropping land, and the lower reaches of the Murray system, the region includes the large conurbation of Southern Adelaide and important regional centres in Victor Harbor, Mount Barker and Murray Bridge. Other major towns include Goolwa, Strathalbyn and the urban village of Stirling. 18% of South Australians live in the region, and it supplies 18% of South Australia’s workforce.
The region can be divided into five major sub-regions:
- Kangaroo Island, South Australia’s largest offshore island, comprising one local government area centred on Kingscote.
- The Fleurieu Peninsula, comprising the District Council of Yankalilla, the City of Victor Harbor, and Alexandrina Council.
- The City of Onkaparinga, one large local government area containing the southern suburbs of the Adelaide metropolitan area and the southern vales.

Nearly 80 percent of the 14,000 businesses in the Region employ less than 5 people. The enterprises are predominantly in Agriculture, Retail, Finance and Property and Business Services and Manufacturing. Considerable employment is also concentrated in community services including health and education.
The (SA) South Central Area Consultative Committee Inc has focused its resources on three key result areas (KRAs) to reflect the needs of the region, encompassing five strategic directions:
KRA 1. Economic Issues, encompassing the strategic directions of wine, food and tourism;
KRA 2. Social Issues, encompassing the strategic direction of community wellbeing; and
KRA 3. Environmental Issues, encompassing the strategic direction of water.
